You may know ĢƵ for its academic rigor, but did you also know that it is home to a Certified Wildlife Habitat? The National Wildlife Federation has certified a new Wildlife Habitat garden right here at ĢƵ!
As the largest wildlife organization in America, the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), dedicates its efforts to conservation and education. The organization is passionate about protecting natural resources and building upon America’s conservation heritage. “The way you care for your own piece of earth has a profound impact on wildlife, people, and the climate,” says NWF.
The Garden for Wildlife movement itself was established in 1973 and is now the nation's biggest native habitat program. Over 300,000 Certified Wildlife Habitat gardens now stretch across North America. In addition, the program has certified gardens in 39 embassies around the world, bringing their total acre coverage to around 4 million.
“We are excited about this new Certified Wildlife Habitat, as it provides native plants and essential habitat elements. Research shows certified properties have the potential to support twice as much wildlife compared to non-certified properties,” said Mary Phillips, Head of Garden for Wildlife.
To become certified, a garden must provide natural sources of food, water, shelter, and a place for wildlife to raise their young. This garden serves as a sanctuary for birds, bees, butterflies, frogs, and other local wildlife. Our piece of earth is required to be maintained sustainably by incorporating native plants, water conservation, and avoiding pesticides.
ĢƵ is honored to be a part of a program that fosters conservation and wildlife education. We thank all participants for their dedication to both the environment and ĢƵ.
